ARTHUR SHOPENHAUER was a German philosopher and mathematician who rose to prominence in the 19^th Century. He is still regarded as one of the most influential philosophers of the modern world. He developed his philosophy of truth by observing the cycle by which new thoughts, ideas, and paradigms are first conceived, then as they are presented to the world, and finally how they are assimilated into the mainstream of our lives.

Although he developed and divulged his thesis some two-hundred years ago, his insight and perception of human Nature and inclination was spot-on during his time and remains just as valid to this very day. To paraphrase his insight is as follows:

The Three Stages of Every Great Idea:

·     At first discovery, when it seems to defy common opinion (or even logic or science) – it is laughable, and it is ridiculed.

·     Second, when it causes distress, or threatens the status quo or comfortably accepted norms – it is violently opposed.

·     Third – it is accepted and becomes self-evident.

All truth passes through three stages:

When you stop to think about it, every new idea (truth) has passed through some form of this very cycle. When we look into the history of science, mathematics, or technology, it’s disturbing to think where we would be if those that had new ideas had given in to the ridicule or opposition of those first two stages and refused to venture on. Truly, every aspect of our modern existence would probably very be different.
